Chelsea product Conor Gallagher wins second Crystal Palace award

Conor Gallagher reinforces importance of Crystal Palace with second Player of the Month award

Chelsea player Conor Gallagher is having fun in south London at Crystal Palace in the opening months of the 2021-22 Premier League campaign, with the England U21 international taking home the W88 Player of the Month award for September.

This is the second of those awards for Gallagher, who received the same honors in August as the start of his fourth loan turned heads at Selhurst Park under new boss Patrick Vieira.

The Epsom native has made five Premier League appearances for the Eagles this season after his loan was finalized, completing 90 minutes in each of them while adding 2 goals and 1 assist for his efforts from the heart of the midfielder from Palace.

Deployed alongside James McArthur and cleared to step further in an advanced 8 role, his brace against West Ham in late August that earned Palace a credible draw was the highlight of his season so far, and the Eagles teammate Wilfried Zaha has been singing his praise lately, while Belgian assistant coach and television expert Thierry Henry claims his appearances for Vieira’s outfit with “everything”.

The future of the Blues remains uncertain

Gallagher is one of many very gifted players to come out of Cobham’s production line in recent years, along with others like Mason Mount, Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah to step through the youth ranks.

But Chelsea have a documented habit of letting bright youngsters go for a decent fee in an effort to keep the coffers ready to splash top talent out of the box in a system that has seen players like Fikayo Tomori, Tino Livramento, Lewis Bate, Myles Peart-Harris are leading the cooperative in search of a more clearly defined path to the first team. Gallagher himself has been on loan four times and has yet to make a single appearance for the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Gallagher is certainly at a crossroads that will make or break his status at a club where he spent 11 years working his way up the system. In the end, his fate will be either that of Mason Mount or one of the many players who have had to find greener pastures elsewhere.
